How to Make Coconut Oil

Materials

  1. 3 medium-sized coconuts
  2. Napkins/paper towels
  3. Blender
  4. Chopping board
  5. Hammer
  6. Pot
  7. Bowls
  8. Sieves
  9. A bowl of warm water

Instructions

First, break the coconuts carefully using the hammer.

Next, remove the coconut meat (flesh) from the shell bit by bit. This should not be difficult if the coconuts are mature.

Rinse the pieces of coconut very well to remove any dirt.  Place the pieces of coconut flesh on the chopping board. Chop them into small pieces. This will make grinding easier.

Grind the pieces of coconut together with a little warm water. Ensure that you have a smooth and consistent mixture after grinding.

Next, carefully sift the mixture to separate the coconut milk from the chaff. Press the mixture to extract all the milk from it.

Grind the chaff again with more warm water to get more coconut milk.

Sieve the mixture again to remove the tiny particles from the coconut milk.

Pour the fine mixture into a medium-sized bowl. Place it in the fridge overnight.  

The next day, remove the mixture from the fridge. You will notice that the coconut oil has separated from the mixture and has caked beautifully.

Carefully remove the caked oil from the top of the mixture. Pour it into a clean, stainless pot.

Cover the pot and place over very low heat. Continue cooking until you notice some burnt coconut bits in the oil. This should take about 1 hour 15 minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat and allow the oil to cool.

Sift the oil with a chiffon cloth or paper towel to remove the charred bits from it.

Store the coconut oil in clean, dry containers. You can use your homemade coconut to moisturize your hair and skin.
