How to make Owo soup
Owo soup is a delicious Urohbo delicacy. It is believed to have a lot of beneficial medicinal properties; especially for nursing mothers. Owo soup is usually prepared with pepper and tomato, and it is normally eaten with starch. The soup is often the signatory dish at Urhobo traditional weddings. Apart from weddings, Owo soup is also served at social gatherings like birthday parties, burials, community meetings and the like. The soup can also be enjoyed at home with family and friends.

- 6-8 pieces of meat (Goat meat preferably)
- 2 cooking spoons of palm oil
- Blended tomatoes
- Habanero pepper
- 2 tablespoons of ground crayfish
- 1 Big smoked fish
- Seasoning powder
- Salt to taste
- Chopped onions
Method of Preparation
- Wash the pieces of meat very well and put them inside a medium-sized pot. Season the meat very well with the chopped onions and seasoning cubes. Place the pot over medium heat and allow the meat to simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add enough water to the meat to form your stock. Leave it to boil until the beef is well-cooked.
- Next, add the blended tomatoes and pepper to the stock and leave it to boil for 5 minutes. Add the ground crayfish and the smoked fish.
- Dissolve the potash in a quarter cup of water. Pour the dissolved potash into the boiling stock.
- Allow the stock to boil until it starts to thicken. When it has reached the desired thickness, remove the soup from the fire. Place on the sink and allow it to cool moderately.
- Now, stir the palm oil, bit by bit, into the soup. This will change the colour of the soup to pale yellow.
Owo soup is usually served with starch. However, some persons like to enjoy this traditional meal with boiled plantain or yam. You can also serve the soup with eba, semolina, wheat or fufu.
