How to Sew a Handmade Pencil Skirt

Materials Needed

2 yards of cotton spandex fabric
2inches of non-roll elastic
A pencil skirt pattern template
Pins
Needle
Thread
Thimble
Measuring tape

Instructions

First, take your body measurements. Mark these measurements on the pencil skirt template. Cut out two pieces of the template in line with your measurements.
Place the two pieces of fabric together. Now, sew the side seams of the skirt using zigzag stitches or stretch stitches. Press the side seams of the skirt towards the back of the skirt.
Next, turn the skirt’s right side out up to the point where the raw edges of the skirt are together. Now, you should have two raw edges on one side of the skirt and a fold on the other side of the skirt.
Place the elastic material around your waist.
You should cut out a piece of the elastic that is smaller than your waist.
Start by folding the elastic material so that the edges overlap by about 1/2 inch and sew them together. You can sew a rectangle on the point where the edges overlap or zigzag multiple lines to attach the elastic together.
Divide the elastic into four and pin each mark. Do the same with the raw edges of the skirt.
Now, place each mark of the elastic to fit each mark of the skirt. Place the raw edges of the skirt in line with the edge of the elastic. Use the pin to hold them together.
Stretch the elastic to fit the raw edges of the skirt and pin between each mark.
Next, sew the elastic to the skirt using zigzag stitches.
Fold the fabric over inside the skirt to enclose the elastic.
Stretch the elastic to fabric then pin the waistband.
Using a matching thread, sew the elastic waistband to the fabric using zigzag stitches. Ensure that you stretch the elastic slightly as you sew.
