Key Points
SELF CARE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND STABILITY
The concept of self-care at times differs from person to person. Practicing self-care means taking care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Everyone must understand the importance of self-care. What differs for some people is how they choose to do this, based on what makes them feel good and cared for individually. It feels good to have others do things that make us feel comfortable. In some situations of stress or sadness, it’s essential for us to feel capable of doing things to care for ourselves as well.
For some people, “self-care” maybe something as simple as getting enough sleep, or drinking enough water to stay hydrated throughout the day. The little things that keep our physical health taken care of can make a positive impact on our mental health as well.
It’s important to understand that practicing self-care means you need to take care of your mental health and your physical health. Taking care of your mental wellbeing may not always appear as simple as attending to the physical needs of food, hydration, and hygiene. Practicing self-care for your emotional and mental wellbeing might mean making decisions that are not always easy, especially if you are a caregiver, parent, or guardian that is responsible for others.
Taking care of yourself amidst difficulties can be quite hard to do. It is always best to have a plan for self-care, especially when you are responsible for others throughout the day. Once you are used to the habit of scheduling time for yourself to practice self-care techniques, it becomes easier to stick to the routine. Through practice, taking time for yourself and doing things that make you feel cared for as an individual becomes more of a natural process.
Also, self-care does not always have to be some grand action or activity. Sometimes self-care can be as simple as taking a few minutes to practice breathing exercises during times of stress. Sometimes self-care is scheduling ‘me’ time – times of solitude to reflect on your day and how you are feeling.
What works for one person as a means of self-care may not resonate with another. It is best to find a personal means of self-care that will help maintain your overall health.
